Enterprise Day

Wow! What a successful Enterprise Day!

Student’s hard work and effort paid off. They did a fantastic job organising and working at their stalls. This was such a valuable learning experience. Students had the opportunity to handle and count money, sell and promote their goods and activities, create budgets and projected sales, communicate with customers and their teams, problem solve on the spot  and plan and organise all elements of their stall including identifying risks.

A very big thank you to the parents that helped on the day and to the parents that donated and helped prepare food and prizes. Your support is greatly appreciated.

Below, I have included a few photos from today and the advertisements that groups made to promote their stalls. They were too good not to show! If your student’s advertisement isn’t here, please feel free to come to the classroom to view.

Enjoy!!!

Enterprise Day Preparation

Last week, students were very busy preparing for Enterprise Day (Some have also been very busy at home too). In groups, students had to prepare a brief, outlining their activity, safety considerations, group responsibilities and costs.  We have been learning about persuasive language. They have applied these skills to their posters and their advertisement they are making on iMovie. It has been wonderful to see great enthusiasm, communication, problem solving and collaboration from students within their groups.

Enterprise Day is this Wednesday from 12.30 – 2.00pm. When sales end at 2.00 pm, students will pack up their stall then head back to class for debrief activities relating to the day. They will be dismissed at the regular time of 3.10.

I look forward to seeing you on Wednesday! It should be a wonderful afternoon.

Spelling Words

Due to the Easter public holidays and preparation for Enterprise Day, students will not be getting any new spelling words for the rest of the term. In class time, we will be revising what we have already learned this term. Students should use their spelling homework time to revise previous weeks words and patterns . These words are located in their diaries.

Camp

We had a great time on camp in week 8!

Students shared that their favourite parts about camp was playing the web of life game, the hike, the food, orienteering and looking at creatures under the microscope.

The top 4 things they learned about while on camp were macroinvertebrate adaptations, how to use maps, different bird species and the importance of team work.

Here are a few photos of some of the activities we participated in!

Class Election

It’s election time!

This week for our civics and citizenship unit we learned about democracy, what makes a good representative, what the three levels of government are and what their responsibilities are and how voting in an election works.

Today, we held a class election, voting in a class mascot. Students numbered the boxes on a ballot paper in order of their choice. Next, we used a preferential voting tool to count our votes to elect our candidate.

…and the winner by absolute majority was…

…Lucky Labrador!!!

If possible, I asked students to attend the polling booth with you tomorrow to get a better understanding about what we have been talking about in class. I will ask for volunteers on Monday to share something they found interesting.

Happy Voting!

Week 6 Wrap Up

English: As a class we read ‘Chip’, a picture book about a cheeky seagull who was wild about fish and chips. Students recreated this story focusing on narrative structure and descriptive language. The stories they created were very enjoyable to read.

WOW! It has been great hearing students use very descriptive language to describe their mystery object. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the class’s oral presentations next week.

Maths: Place value has been our focus in maths. We have been using MAB blocks, whiteboards, games, quizzes, number lines and problems to learn about and develop our understanding of regrouping, expanded notation, rounding, ordering numbers to 10,000 and multiplying and dividing by 10.

We finished off our week of inspirational math. A main message for the maths tasks we completed was, “There is no such thing as a math brain or a math person! Anyone can learn any level of math with hard work and effort!”

One of the tasks students completed, involved groups building shapes with a rope tied in a knot. They had to convince me that their shape was accurate. Students worked really hard, believing in their abilities to create various shapes. Here are a few shapes that they achieved.

Growth mindset activities: People with a growth mindset believe that they can develop their abilities through dedication and hard work. We found out that brains are a lot like a muscle. It changes and gets stronger when we practise and learn new things. Our brain grows the most when we make mistakes and then figure out strategies to correct our mistakes, instead of just giving up.

We discussed things that we are determined to get better at and what strategies we are going to try so that we can improve.

Digital Safety: We have been discussing and completing activities about personal safety and protective measures for dealing with strangers online.

Students created a personal profile, suitable to be posted online. We discussed what information they might include and exclude.

Safe profiles could include:

  • First name, nickname
  • Hobbies and interests but no specific details such as club name
  • Favourite foods, books, movies etc.

These are published outside our classroom.

Buddies: All students now have a little buddy in Ms Scicchitano’s reception class. This week little buddies drew their big buddies while big buddies drew their little buddies. Next, they compared their favourite things.

Homework: Today, students took home four weeks worth of maths homework tasks. The week that they are due is written on them. This will give students extra time to complete.

Have a lovely long weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing all students on Tuesday!
