English: As a class we read ‘Chip’, a picture book about a cheeky seagull who was wild about fish and chips. Students recreated this story focusing on narrative structure and descriptive language. The stories they created were very enjoyable to read.
WOW! It has been great hearing students use very descriptive language to describe their mystery object. I can’t wait to hear the rest of the class’s oral presentations next week.
Maths: Place value has been our focus in maths. We have been using MAB blocks, whiteboards, games, quizzes, number lines and problems to learn about and develop our understanding of regrouping, expanded notation, rounding, ordering numbers to 10,000 and multiplying and dividing by 10.
We finished off our week of inspirational math. A main message for the maths tasks we completed was, “There is no such thing as a math brain or a math person! Anyone can learn any level of math with hard work and effort!”
One of the tasks students completed, involved groups building shapes with a rope tied in a knot. They had to convince me that their shape was accurate. Students worked really hard, believing in their abilities to create various shapes. Here are a few shapes that they achieved.
Growth mindset activities: People with a growth mindset believe that they can develop their abilities through dedication and hard work. We found out that brains are a lot like a muscle. It changes and gets stronger when we practise and learn new things. Our brain grows the most when we make mistakes and then figure out strategies to correct our mistakes, instead of just giving up.
We discussed things that we are determined to get better at and what strategies we are going to try so that we can improve.
Digital Safety: We have been discussing and completing activities about personal safety and protective measures for dealing with strangers online.
Students created a personal profile, suitable to be posted online. We discussed what information they might include and exclude.
Safe profiles could include:
- First name, nickname
- Hobbies and interests but no specific details such as club name
- Favourite foods, books, movies etc.
These are published outside our classroom.
Buddies: All students now have a little buddy in Ms Scicchitano’s reception class. This week little buddies drew their big buddies while big buddies drew their little buddies. Next, they compared their favourite things.
Homework: Today, students took home four weeks worth of maths homework tasks. The week that they are due is written on them. This will give students extra time to complete.
Have a lovely long weekend. I’m looking forward to seeing all students on Tuesday!
